The thinking
A marine park that has been one for a long time
Mafia sits south of Zanzibar and gets a fraction of the visitors. Its bay and surrounding waters are a marine park, and the reef shows it — coral in condition, fish in numbers, and a scale of tourism that has not overwhelmed either.
The island itself is quiet and largely agricultural. There is no strip, very little at night, and a small number of places to stay. That is the appeal and it is also the thing to be honest about before anyone books.
Between roughly the last months of the year and the start of the next, whale sharks gather in the coastal waters here to feed. When conditions allow, it is one of the great wildlife encounters anywhere. It is also entirely up to the ocean.

Straight answer
We will never promise you a whale shark.
They are seasonal and they are wild. Some days the conditions, the plankton and the animals all line up and it is extraordinary. Some days you go out and see nothing, and you have still had a good morning on the water.
We book the season, not the sighting. Any operator selling you a guaranteed swim is selling you something that is not theirs to guarantee, and the pressure that creates on the animals is exactly how these encounters get ruined.
When we do go out, it is with operators who keep their distance, do not chase and do not put swimmers on top of an animal that is feeding. That occasionally means a shorter encounter. It is the only version worth having.

Four to seven days on and in the water
Day 1
Arrival, and the bay
A short flight down from Dar es Salaam or across from Zanzibar, and into somewhere small on the water. The first afternoon is for the bay itself — a swim, a look at the reef edge, and a conversation with your dive or snorkel guide about what the conditions are doing this week.

Day 2
The reef, properly
Out to the reef with a local operator. Coral gardens, walls, and the kind of fish life that makes people who thought they did not care about snorkelling change their minds. Divers get the more interesting sites; snorkellers get more of the day than they expect.

Whale sharks, when the season and conditions allow
In season, an early start along the coast with an operator who works these animals responsibly — no chasing, no crowding, and a willingness to come back empty. Some mornings are remarkable. Some are a boat ride, and the crew will tell you honestly which one you are having.

Day 4
Chole, and the island’s other half
A day out of the water: the ruins on Chole with their strangler figs and their layers of Swahili and colonial history, the boatbuilders, and the villages and coconut country that make up most of the island. It reframes the marine park as part of a place people live in.

Day 5
Sandbanks and the flat water
A slower day: a sandbank that appears on the tide and disappears again, a dhow in the afternoon, a long lunch and nothing that resembles a schedule. This is the day guests describe when they get home.

Four days is enough; a week is better, because weather and conditions move and the extra days are what let you take the good ones. Whale shark season and diving conditions vary by month, and your planner will tell you plainly what your dates are likely to give you.

Why this shape
Because the coast is not one place
Tanzania’s ocean is sold almost entirely as Zanzibar, and Zanzibar is now busy in the places that are easy to reach. That is not a criticism of it — it is a reason to know what else there is.
Mafia is quieter, wetter, less polished and considerably better underwater. For the right traveller it is the best week on this coast, and for the wrong one it is too quiet. Knowing which you are is the conversation we would rather have before you book.

Before you ask us
- Will we swim with whale sharks?
- In season, when conditions allow, and never as a promise. They are wild animals following food. We book the season and go out with operators who behave properly around them, and some mornings there is nothing to see. Anyone guaranteeing it is not being straight with you.
- Is Mafia better than Zanzibar?
- Better underwater, quieter above it, and much less developed. Worse if you want a resort, a choice of restaurants or anything at night. It depends entirely on which of those you are after.
- Do we need to dive?
- No. The snorkelling here is genuinely good and much of the reef is shallow. Divers get more out of the outer sites, but the island works either way — it works least well if you would rather stay dry.
- When is the best time to go?
- It depends on whether you are optimising for whale sharks, for diving conditions or for weather, and those are not always the same months. Tell your planner which matters most and you will get a straight answer.

- A land day in the middle
- Chole and the island’s history are genuinely interesting, and a week of only water flattens out. It also gives the weather somewhere to go.
- Never sold as a Zanzibar substitute for beach guests
- Guests who want a resort week will be disappointed here and should go elsewhere. Mafia is for people who want to be in the water.

Where you stay
A handful of small properties, most of them close to the water and none of them large. Position relative to the bay and the reef decides how much of the day is spent travelling to it, which is the only thing worth optimising here.

- The largest single lever. Property, room category, meal and drink basis all change the real operating cost.

- More nights in fewer places may improve the journey; remote regions cost more to reach and supply.

- Scheduled flights and charters can buy back whole days. They are included only where the product page and confirmed proposal say so.
- Party and rooming
- Vehicle, guide and fixed logistics are divided across the party. Solo travel, single rooms, family rooms and exclusive use change the per-person figure.
